Job Description
The Workers’ Compensation Manager is responsible for the creation, implementation, and management of all aspects of RB Global’s workers’ compensation programs in both the United States and Canada. Reporting to the People Relations Manager, this position proactively oversees and manages all aspects and phases of workplace injury claims from initial investigation and reporting, coordinating appropriate medical treatment, and concluding with return-to-work plans. All claims management must be conducted in accordance with company policies and procedures and any applicable jurisdictional rules and regulations. As part of the claims management process, this role will be required to review and assess medical evaluations to assist in ensuring the appropriate treatment plan is being undertaken. Ongoing communication with all stakeholders inclusive of but not limited to employees, supervisors, insurance carriers, third-party adjusters, and medical personnel is essential. This position will partner with safety teams, claim adjusters, insurance brokers, and other internal and external groups to review, investigate, and assist in the decision-making process regarding coverage, compensability, and loss control initiatives. This role is also responsible for providing the initial review of all expenses associated with workers’ compensation claims, including state & provincial WC data and premium processing for payment.
Responsibilities
- Responsible as the organization’s in-house expert for all workers’ compensation-related matters in both the United States and Canada. Provides guidance to all business units by offering technical expertise and advice on all workers’ compensation-related matters.
- Daily workers’ compensation incident investigation and reporting to respective insurance carrier and workers’ compensation boards.
- Single source of communication with claimants, department supervisors, EHS teams, human resources, medical personnel, and claims adjusters with respect to individual claims.
- Collection and dissemination of all supporting materials to stakeholders for each workers’ compensation claim.
- Ensure all workers’ compensation claims are handled in a manner consistent with established company policies and procedures.
- Manage workers’ compensation litigation budgets, evaluate adequacy of claim reserves, and advise on adjustments where necessary.
- Review claims for managed care opportunities and recommend assignments.
- Review claims for surveillance and second opinion opportunities and recommend assignments.
- Maintain a diary of all key dates for all open claims to ensure all milestones are addressed and company remains compliant with all employer requirements.
- Drafting new and revision of workers’ compensation-related policies and procedures to ensure adherence to best practices and jurisdictional requirements.
- Self-directed, continuous education with respect to key changes to worker’s compensation legal and regulatory environments in all U.S. and Canadian jurisdictions that RB Global operates in to ensure compliance.
- Coordinate and lead quarterly claims reviews with the insurance carriers.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of selected defense counsels for each workers’ compensation claim requiring legal representation to ensure RB Global’s interests are adequately protected.
- Assist EHS team with OSHA logs by providing lost time data.
- Prepare internal monthly and annual reports of claims, lost time, restricted days, recordable incidents, and financial summaries as needed or requested.
- Identify loss drivers and claims trends to reduce claims frequency and severity through data analysis and improved claim management.
- Determine actual time missed from work due to work related injuries and illnesses and provides accurate information to meet OSHA record-keeping requirements.
- Communicate benefits and program goals with managers and injured workers for the purpose of loss control.
- Regularly produce and review workers’ compensation loss runs to ensure proactive claims management and opportunities to close claims, reduce costs, etc.
- Providing evidence of workers’ compensation coverage to requesting parties as required to support the Sales and Operations teams.
- Assist with EHS initiatives as required to support safe and healthy workplace.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- 4-6 years of experience in Safety, Workers’ Compensation and/or Risk management space
- Demonstrated knowledge of Workers' Compensation claims management related laws and medical and legal terminology
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, negotiating, and decision-making skills
